Air and fuel flow meters

I just stumbled upon a lovely post by conanecu, posted yesterday, over on Tuning entitled Blog Archive » 2011 Cars of the Year?or are They? that I would suggest all of you read! I’ve included a few little excerpts in order to pique your interest!

Recently the list of the top contenders for the North American Car of the year was released. Topping the list are the Chevy Volt, Nissan Leaf and the Hyundai Sonata, which are all great cars. These cars use new and redesigned highly efficient parts though out the cars, from the wheel hub bearing and mass air flow meters to the radiator fan. These cars are going to be great cars for the average day to day commute, but let’s be honest there are not many of us that see these cars on the street and wish we had one. The cars that we dream about are not the gas sipping hybrids, they are the howling sports cars that capture our hearts.

Reading this post got me thinking so I did a quick search for some more posts on the subject and uncovered some more greats. For example, Are Flow Meters Helpful In Many Ways? by youngmaze18, posted yesterday, over on Youngmaze:

These are not commonly used that being displays publicly but for special purposes. You will find very different types of flowmeter devices currently available. Some of these flow meters may be used within the construction of a tube or pipe to watch via flow. Others may literally sit on the exterior from the tube framework to watch through flow.

 [...]

It is because these devices must depend upon its usage in many activities. Even though they are also called the same but the functions are different. Other factors that will decide on the kind of flow meter utilized include the cost of inserting it right into a pipe/tube and the ramifications of doing this. You may know about the device for measurements of liquid or gas but there are still so many things you need to know more.

Another fine post on the subject came from Raid3n over on TunedTech Car Enthusiast – Automotive Forum Community posted yesterday, entitled BMW Air Intake Sensor Location which is also definitely worth a read.

Most vehicles have their IAT – Temp sensor located on the air intake track of the vehicle. It will have 2 wires going to a plug mounted on the air intake track or air intake manifold of most vehicles.. If you cannot find your IAT and your car is 2000+ , then it maybe built into your MAF = Mass Air Flow meter and will have 4-5 wires going to it. This connector is located on your air intake track as well. Click here if you have the 4-5 wire MAF and not the 2 wire IAT by its self.BMW IAT Location: The location of the IAT is under the air intake manifold, the big black plastic with tubes going through it coming from the intake to the engine. It could also be on the throttle body area. It is not the HFM after the air box which measures how may air flow is going to your engine.
