I just found a lovely article posted yesterday, by USATopTrends, and entitled 2011 Most Fuel Efficient Cars that I would strongly suggest all of you read. I’ve included a few little extracts in order to whet your appetites!

New Year has come to USA with a new intent to bring energy efficiency on the automobile market. We have by now seen fascinating cars like the Nissan LEAF and the Chevrolet Volt that are set to revolutionize the way our cars work, but there are more options out there, according to a list compiled by the Daily Green, called the “2011 most fuel well-methodical cars”. Thrilling cars may have a hefty price for some people, but guarantees and tax incentives could make them more affordable. The list of fuel well-methodical cars for 2011 includes: 2011 Nissan Leaf 2011 Tesla Roadster 2011 Chevrolet Bolt 2011 Toyota Prius 2011 Lexus CT 200h 2011 Civic Hybrid These are just some of the top options in the list, but there are many more cars to explore. Each one of them is listed with the cost and fuel economy among other data worth comparing. Many of these vehicles have a price below $14,000, with Hyundai donation a base price of under $10,000. Many midsize sedans have been introduced thankfulness to hybrid and clean diesel technologies, a perfect example of this is the Jetta Vokswagen Sportswagen.

Reading USATopTrends’s article started me off thinking so I googled for some more articles on the subject and discovered some more goodposts! For example, Americans are Getting it: Clean Diesel Technology is on the Move … by admin, posted back in 2010, on VW TDI:

com (with a hat tip to HybridCars.com) took a look at the year-to-date sales numbers for clean diesels and hybrids in the United States and came up with some very interesting math for fans of TDI® vehicles and its sister technologies. Overall hybrid sales for the year were down 10% through September, while clean diesel vehicles were up an astonishing 124.1% for the same time period over last year! We at Volkswagen sold almost 5,000 of our Jetta TDI clean diesel vehicles in September alone! Now, we know that clean diesel technology is amazing and we’ve been evangelizing it for quite some time. But we have to admit that nearly a 125% increase in sales for the overall industry from last year surprises even us. So what conclusions can we draw? More than anything, this suggests that American consumers are starting to get the TDI clean diesel message. They recognize that you can enjoy the thrill of driving while still conserving fuel and reducing your carbon footprint.* And it’s with good reason that the Jetta TDI sedan leads the pack.

 [...]

It boasts 42 highway mpg and produces up to 90% fewer emissions than previous diesels. Congratulations to our fans for helping to spread the TDI message. Let’s make 2011 another record year for clean diesel sales in the United States. That’s Das Auto! http://green.autoblog.

Yet another fantastic article came from News LI Editor over on NewsLI.com posted back in 2010, entitled NYSERDA Awards $1.3 million to Clean Diesel Technologies to … which is also definitely worth reading.

The award was made through the New York City Ferry Emission Reduction Program, which is administered jointly by NYSERDA and the New York City Department of Transportation. The program is funded in part by a $4.8 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration for the purpose of evaluating and implementing emissions control technologies on private ferries operating in New York Harbor. Over the next several months, CDTI will supply and manage the installation of diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC’s) to more than 20 private ferry vessels operated by NY Waterway. DOC’s will mitigate the release of harmful greenhouse gases into the New York City/New Jersey air basin as well as improve the air quality around ferry docking ports and enhance comfort of ferry passengers and crew. “Public-private partnerships like the Ferry Emission Reduction Program are critical to helping improve our environment,” said Francis J.

“The economic and environmental investments announced today will help mitigate the environmental impact of the City’s ferry operations, improve local air quality, and help achieve the ambitious environmental goals set by Governor Paterson and Mayor Bloomberg.” “Reducing our carbon footprint means becoming more efficient in our operations, whether it’s from using cleaner fuels in our Staten Island Ferry fleet or recycled asphalt to repair our streets,” said DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan. “Thanks to Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC initiative, New York’s transportation network is already one of the greenest in the world, and this grant will help private operators stay competitive as we continue our work to create a more sustainable City.” “CDTI is pleased to be participating in this extremely important project,” said Michael Asmussen, CDTI President and CEO. “We thank NYSERDA for taking a leadership role in addressing unregulated marine emissions sources and believe the benefits will be significant both now and in the future. CDTI shares the view that the marine segment represents an important target for the reduction of harmful emissions and, therefore, is investing in the development of product solutions to address the problem.

Today’s announcement follows a successful three year, $216,000 demonstration of diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC’s) technology on three test vessels. DOC’s fitted on test vessels were proven to significantly reduce diesel particulate matter and other harmful emissions. Installation of DOCS is being expanded to cover a larger portion of New York City’s private ferry fleet. Diesel oxidation catalysts, which also are installed on school buses, delivery trucks, and other commercial vehicles, provide significant environmental and public health benefits. They include reduced NOx emissions and particulates, improved air quality, and a healthier ferry ride for passengers and crew on the boats.
