Preliminary Sketches. Vans OTW by Chris Law
I just found a brilliant article posted last week, by Sneaker Box Clyde, and entitled Preliminary Sketches. Vans OTW by Chris Law that I strongly urge you all to read. Here are a few little excerpts in order to whet your appetites!
Those who know me, know that I’m a big fan of sneaker design. Part of what we do here at Sneakerbox is to document and tell the stories of the technology, aesthetics and who’s behind the design work. Just recently I myself learned that Crooked Tongues‘ very own Chris Law was behind a lot of great shoes for many brands. I also recently discovered his “Bits & Do-Dads” Blog where he documents his work and collaborations. We’ve reached out to Chris for a full interview or a little Q & A.

I wish I could draw. LOL I’m awesome at color blocking and material placement but when it comes to sketch work and silhouette design, I’m lost. Enjoy. C.
Reading this post got me thinking so I did a google search for more articles on the subject and discovered some more greats. e.g. this post by Kate Pruitt, posted a fortnight ago, on a blog called Design*Sponge:
Trace the shape with the pencil. This will transfer the pencil to the white paper, and at the same time, apply graphite to the other side of the drawing to transfer again! 4. Now flip the illustration over (right to left) to trace the shape on the quadrant next to the one you just finished. 5. Continue flipping the illustration and tracing until all of the quadrants of the white paper are traced with the botanical shape. 6. With the X-acto knife, cut out the botanical shape from the white paper. (If you can keep it all in one piece, you can use the positive image in another project!) 7. Pull out the piece that you cut, leaving a negative shape in the white paper. 8.
Finally, another fine post came from Michelle Adorjan over on Tacori News posted a fortnight ago and entitled The Tacori Crescent Silhouette which is also certainly worth a read.
Tacori Crescent Silhouette Spanning four decades, Tacori designs have fused classic elegance with modern inspiration, creating some of the world’s most highly regarded and exquisite engagement rings. The stunning beauty and intricacy of each piece of Tacori jewelry is instantly recognized by the signature design element of the crescent silhouette: interlocking half-moon arcs, which provide windows of light to reflect the brilliance of the diamonds placed within each crescent silhouette semi-circle. Tacori originated the crescent silhouette design, and this luxurious motif is a hallmark of Tacori, and a mark of exquisite taste. From the original Tacori Crescent collection this ring truly demonstrates the timeless beauty and passion that is expressed in every unique piece of Tacori jewelry. Combine signature Tacori design with your own flair for fashion with this diamond engagement ring, featuring a full carat of diamonds in the setting alone, this ring can be customized to fit your perfect center stone shape and size. Every facet of this dramatically beautiful piece reflects the passion for creating family heirlooms to be treasured for generations. Let Tacori’s passion be the ultimate expression of your passion.
