Plane lands on cars in Florida

Earlier today, I came across a wonderful article posted earlier today, by Angelia Kates, and entitled Plane lands on cars in Florida that I encourage you all to read! Here’s a couple of little excerpts to whet your appetites!

The media reported the student was attempting to take off in the single-engine plane Thursday afternoon when he had problems, landed and then hit two parked cars at Tampa North Aero Park. Helicopter video showed the plane resting on top of the cars in the parking lot near a hangar. No injuries were reported. Gregory Daryl Johnson, 59, of 5119 Carey Road, Tampa, encountered problems during his second solo flight and skidded off the runway and into the cars at Tampa Aero North Airpark, Pasco Sheriff’s Officials said. The 60-year-old student pilot was on his second solo flight. The pilot tells witnesses a seat cushion got jammed underneath one of his rudder pedals causing the plane to turn sharply.

Now, reading Angelia Kates’s post started me thinking so I had a quick search around for some more articles on the subject and discovered some more greats. For example, Plane Crash Information & Aviation Safety Issues … by Fernando Montalvo, posted back in October, on Velozia Air:

The accident occurred at approximately 2:00 PM EDT.  The student pilot aboard the Cessna 172P Skyhawk (N612CB) was OK after the accident. Reports are still a bit sketchy, but it appears the aircraft was on its takeoff roll or was attempting to land after a takeoff when it veered off the runway and crashed into a white Chevy Impala and a blue Chevy Aveo.  In media pictures, the flaps appear to have considerable extension so I’m tempted to think the plane was landing, but it may have been attempting to depart with full flaps (which may have been part of the problem).  The student pilot was reportedly in his second solo flight. At the moment, it is unclear what happened.  Since this is a student pilot’s second solo flight, we don’t know if this was a basic flight control error or if something more serious occurred. The parking lot where the cars were located belongs to Rochester Electro Medical, a business at the airport’s industrial park.

Finally, another fine post came from Scott McPherson on Florida Personal Injury Law posted back in October and entitled Tampa Aviation Accident which is also definitely worth a look.

You are here: Home / Personal Injury Help / Tampa Aviation Accident There was an aviation accident right outside the Tampa North Aero Park on Thursday and the name of the pilot has now been released by the authorities. It was student pilot Gregory Daryl Johnson, 59, who tried to land the plane after running into difficulties shortly after takeoff. He skidded off the runway and collided with two cars that were parked in the parking lot of a business adjacent to the airport. Fortunately, the cars were unoccupied and Johnson escaped injury. Many people are afraid of flying, and this understandable because there is very little margin for error and you don’t have the subtle peace of mind that comes along with having four wheels on the ground.

But the fact is that the odds of being injured in an airplane crash are slim, and it is much more likely that you will be hurt while driving a car. You have an eleven million to one chance of being aboard an aircraft that crashes, but your odds of dying in a fatal automobile accident are one in 5,000. It is clear that flying in and of itself does not present an inordinate amount of danger. But as the aviation accident in Tampa shows, it is challenging to learn how to pilot an aircraft safely. Johnson had just one previous solo flight under his belt, and even though strict licensing requirements are in place, no one can predict how an inexperienced pilot will react under circumstances he or she has never encountered before.
