Stan Hartman: Electric cars

Posted in Uncategorized on January 31st, 2011 by cars2scrap – 554 Comments

I recently found an awesome post by Camera staff, posted earlier today, over on Daily Camera: Letters to the Editor entitled Stan Hartman: Electric cars that I strongly encourage you all to read! Here are some excerpts in the hope of whetting your appetites!

Charlie Danaher in the Sunday Camera says “changing our behavior for the better requires a complete and honest assessment of our choices, and then fails to be complete and honest in his assessment of his own arguments against electric cars and the ecological snobbishness of some of their owners. He also doesn’t seem to notice how much he’s looking down his nose himself. I’ve noticed this kind of holier-than-thou attitude from him before, and it certainly doesn’t contribute to a complete and honest assessment of anything. In his critique of electric vehicles, for instance, he factors in the costs of converting natural gas into electricity, etc.

Now then, reading this started me thinking so I had a quick search around for more posts on the subject and uncovered some more greats. i.e. Boeing has received massive and illegal government subsidies for … posted earlier today, by Rob Vogelaar, on INTERNATIONAL AVIATION NEWS:

Today’s World Trade Oganisation (WTO) decision confirms that Boeing has received massive and illegal government subsidies for many decades, and that they have had a significant and ongoing negative effect on European industry. The final WTO-report to be publicly released in a few weeks can be expected to say: 1. Boeing would not have been able to launch the 787 without illegal subsidies. 2. Boeing has received at least $5 billion of US taxpayer dollars which has been determined illegal.  Quantification of the additional subsides beyond this figure will take place in later stages of this dispute if Boeing chooses to pursue it. 3. An additional more than $2 billion in state and local subsidies that Boeing will receive in the future are illegal. 4. The effect of the subsidies is significantly larger than the face value of the subsidies in light of their particularly pervasive nature. 5.

Another fine article came from jimlynch9999 over on Actuarial Opinions posted earlier today, entitled The hidden subsidy in health care reform which is also definitely worth a read.

Community rating says, in essence, you can’t discriminate because of pre-existing conditions. Column C shows how much these two would be charged – the same amount. And that amount would have to be enough to cover the total expected cost, $8,250. So each would be charged $4,125.

 [...]

And Wealthy doesn’t even know it. He probably doesn’t know his own expected costs, and he certainly doesn’t know the expected cost of the Healthy Guy. If he thinks about the Healthy Guy at all, it’s probably to grumble about the good fortune of a Guy who gets a free ride from the government. But both parties benefited, even though it doesn’t seem that way at a glance. Notice that this system works only because you have: An individual mandate. Government subsidies. Community rating. Were there no mandate, Healthy Guy would remain out of the market, and Wealthy Guy’s premium would jump back to $6,250.

39;Talking’ Cars Are Coming Soon to Keep Us Safe

I just stumbled upon a stimulating post by Rob, posted earlier today, over on www.Thenewsbomb.com entitled 39;Talking' Cars Are Coming Soon to Keep Us Safe that I would encourage all of you to read. Here’s a couple of extracts in order to whet your appetites!

Chuck Squatriglia Wired January 31, 2011 It won’t be long before our cars “talk” to each other, keeping tabs on everything around us and alerting us to threats we aren’t aware of. Several automakers are developing these nanny cars, and the government is seeking ideas to advance the technology. Ford has shown the technology works, rolling out a crash-avoidance system that allows cars to communicate with each other at distances of more than 900 feet. It uses GPS and wi-fi signals emitted 10 times a second to provide a 360-degree view around the car. When the system detects a risk — say, someone running a red light at the next intersection — it warns the driver.

Now then, reading this started me off thinking so I searched for some more posts on the subject and discovered some more gems. i.e. this post posted last week, by unknown, on a blog called 100 Mile Bike:

Never be in a hurry. When you’re in a hurry, you can get careless or take unnecessary chances. It also makes it more likely that you could be darting in and out quickly and automobile drivers might not even see you. When Bicycling 12. Use your headlight—even during the day—so drivers have a better chance of seeing you. 13. Use your mirrors so you know what is going on around you at all times. 14. Ride on the street with other traffic, not on the sidewalk, traveling in the same direction as motor vehicle traffic, not against it. 15. Know—and use—hand signals.

 [...]

Don’t swerve, weave in and out of traffic or parked cars, or make any erratic or sudden moves. 17. Obey traffic signs, signals, and road markings and yield to pedestrians – just like any other vehicle on the roadway. 18. Use your horn or bell if you will be crossing in front of another vehicle so you give an audible signal—it’s more likely to get the other motorists attention. 19. Make eye contact with motorists if possible, so you know that they see you. Drive Defensively 20. Watch for hazards such as pot holes, puddles, loose gravel, spare car parts, drain grates, rocks, litter or garbage, parked cars opening their doors, pets running loose, and other vehicles. 21.

Another fine article on the subject came from WAauthors over on Easy Online Jobs Review posted earlier today, entitled Get Correct Fire Safety Equipment Because You Have Only One Life … which is also certainly worth a look.

Now then, reading admin’s article got me thinking so I had a quick search around for some more articles on the subject and uncovered some more niceposts! e.g. 1More Film Blog » Monsters, Inc. (Docter, Silverman, Unkrich, 2001) by Kenneth R. Morefield, posted last week, on a blog called 1More Film Blog:

ten years later? It was the “Coming Soon” preview for Disney’s Treasure Planet. It is a sign of how quickly things can change in a decade that I had to strain to recall that Pixar wasn’t always the seven hundred pound gorilla in the animation room. The Treasure Planet preview was even more disconcerting than the preview for Finding Nemo, which sent me scurrying to Wikipedia to recall the order in which Pixar films were released. Toy Story 2 was the third offering from the studio? Really? Monsters, Inc. won one Oscar, but it wasn’t for Best Animated Feature (that went to Shrek–think the Academy wants a do over?) but rather for Best Song. It probably says something about both me and the award that I just rescreened the film about two weeks ago for this column and I couldn’t hum a bar of it if my paycheck depended on it.

 [...]

In 2001, at Viewpoint (a personal film blog, now defunct), I posted a Top 5 (rather than 10) at the end of my film viewing year. Monsters, Inc. came in at #5: The number 5 slot is usually reserved for a commercially successful studio film that succeeds in entertaining well even if it has little pretension of being important. I choose Monsters Inc. because I enjoyed it incrementally more than other successful pieces that sought primarily or solely to entertain rather than challenge (Shrek, Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Oceans 11, Harry Potter). Why? Who knows. Like Toy Story 2, it really is a feel good movie at heart, with John Goodman’s Sully becoming the surrogate father that was so hauntingly absent from both Toy Story and Toy Story 2. Monsters, Inc.

 [...]

Granted, defenders of the film might say this, too, is by intention, following the formula of moving seamlessly from humor to pathos. I’m not buying, though. Oh, the heartstrings are plucked fairly well enough, but I do think it is trying to keep its edge well into the second and third act. As avatars for celebrity voices, Mike (Billy Crystal) is pretty generic, leaving only Sully (John Goodman) as a memorable character from the film.  I’ll tell you one thing I do love about the film: the color palette. Through most of the first half of the film I kept thinking, “This is so bright!” Then it hit me…I’m already calibrated to the persistent, incessant, need to make everything in 3D, with the indoor glasses not dark enough to protect you from the rays of the sun but plenty dark enough to make everything you watch look like it has a grey haze over it. I didn’t give the film a grade the first time around, but as it made my “Top 5″ and I ranked it higher than at least one film I originally gave an A- to, I’m assuming I gave it the highest marks.

Finally, another fantastic post on the subject came from DJ on Fastlane Lifestyle Magazine posted a fortnight ago and entitled Disney Pixar's Cars 2 Trailers which is also definitely worth a look.

When I think of John Lasseter’s last film, Cars, I fondly recall the storyline of the forgotten town of Radiator Springs off of historic Route 66. I think the notion of a town passed by and forgotten is relevant these days, and it struck a chord with me even if the film as a whole didn’t quite capture my imagination as other Pixar efforts have in the past. However, for Cars 2, they are putting that storyline behind them and going overseas. Brad Lewis will make his foray into directing as he joins Lasseter as co-director, with Mater and Lightning McQueen returning for a new adventure. We now have the official synopsis and image for the film, so hit the jump to check out both.  Cars 2 is set to open in 3D on June 24, 2011. Here’s the image (via People), poster (via Yahoo), and synopsis.

 [...]

Along with that, we have the confirmed cast to this point, which includes Owen Wilson, Tony Shalhoub, John Ratzenberger, Cheech Marin, Larry the Cable Guy, and Bonnie Hunt. That means McQueen’s pit crew will be returning, along with his love interest, Sally Carrera. **Newest Trailer** Here’s the official synopsis for Cars 2: Star racecar Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) and the incomparable tow truck Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy) take their friendship to exciting new places in Cars 2 when they head overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car. But the road to the championship is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and hilarious surprises when Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage. Torn between assisting Lightning McQueen in the high-profile race and towing the line in a top-secret spy mission, Mater’s action-packed journey leads him on an explosive chase through the streets of Japan and Europe, trailed by his friends and watched by the whole world.  Adding to the fast-paced fun is a colorful new all-car cast that includes secret agents, menacing villains and international racing competitors. John Lasseter returns to the driver’s seat to direct this follow-up to his 2006 Golden Globe®-winning Cars.

Aston Martin Virage Volante Diamond Jubilee Edition Chassis No 60200 FOR SALE This unique one off hand built Aston Martin Virage Volante Diamond Jubilee Edition is a collectors item in a class of its own The above car was built to commemorate the occasion

I just discovered a stimulating post by timscribbles, posted last week, and entitled Cars and Coffee that I would strongly urge you all to read. Below are some little excerpts in the hope of whetting your appetites!

Dragged myself out of bed this morning to check out the end of the month Cars and Coffee meet. Turn out was pretty good this week. I walked around and took a couple shots for about a hour or two. Ford GT rolled through. Engine shot. The exhausts on this motor are insane.

 [...]

Interior shot Little windows on the GT. Interior shot of a Special Anniversary Edition Supra Turbo Shelby Cobra. Daytona LS7 Firehawk I really liked this shot. Aston Martin Vantage I have definitely never seen a Aston Martin Virage in person before.

Reading timscribbles’s article got me thinking so I did a google search for more posts on the subject and found some more greats. i.e. this post by admin, posted a fortnight ago, over on Car News | Auto Updates:

Unveiled as a 2+2 coupe at Birmingham in late ’89, a Volante convertible followed in 1993. Virage exports to the United States ended the next year. A 550-horsepower Vantage was introduced in 1992 but was never exported to the U.S. It offered the same basic format as its predecessor but with a 5.3-liter all-aluminum engine modified by Callaway Engineering in the United States for a new four-valve cylinder head, intake manifold, and Weber-Marelli electronic management system. Front suspension was still by twin wishbones, rear by Watt linkage and de Dion tube, but the last was now square-section aluminum. The Virage had a sleeker body, still aluminum-paneled, with integral spoilers at each end, plus flush headlamps and side glass — all for a lower drag coefficient, down to a claimed 0.34. It also featured a modernized dash and even more luxury features than late AM V-8s, including a heated windshield, rear window, and front seats; trip computer; and remote infrared alarm system.

Yet another fine post on the subject came from admin over on Best Car Deals posted a fortnight ago and entitled 1992 Aston Martin Virage which is also certainly worth reading!

This was to allow the engine to run on unleaded fuel anywhere, but particularly in America. In March of 1992, a 6.3 litre version of the Virage was revealed with a top speed of 174 mph and a 0-60 mph time of 5.4 seconds. Handling and braking were improved and for the first time on an Aston Martin the option of ABS was offered. The chassis was quite a bit different from any previous design although it retained the same basic dimensions for wheelbase and track.

Comparision of Chevy Volt, Ford Focus, and Nissan Leaf Electric …

Posted in Uncategorized on January 31st, 2011 by cars2scrap – 446 Comments

you vehicle The Volt will have 150 horsepower and might be able to have a 0 60 time of 6 seconds or less It is expected to be released late 2010 and will cost between 35 000 and 40 000

Earlier today, I stumbled upon a good article posted earlier today, by Jessica Benton, over on eLiving Media entitled Comparision of Chevy Volt, Ford Focus, and Nissan Leaf Electric … that I suggest you all read. Below are a couple of excerpts in order to pique your interest!

Move over hybrids, make room for all electric autos plugging in. We always ask ourselves if these new all electric models will be functional for the average household and feasible to make the jump into this new wave of cars. The features compared side by side, the price tags, and look of the cars are general concerns of any car buyer. I have been able to see a few of the cars that will be hitting the market later this year from some of our largest automobile makers in the country.

 [...]

Purchasing one of these cars will get Americans into becoming more green. I made a side by side comparison chart so you can compare each all electric car model and its features. All three car models, the Volt, Focus, and Leaf will be available this year and I have heard projections that by 2015 electric cars will be 25% of the market. The government is working to have recharging stations built in locations all around towns like McDonalds, dealerships, and possibly even Starbucks.

 [...]

In that case the Volt looks like the best choice for rural families. For a family vehicle the Focus has the most room but is still classified as a compact car. Ford has stated that their technology was built to adapt to other models and I have heard rumors that the next vehicle in the Ford line will be the Ford Edge. The Edge is more of a family car and is also more stylish. The smartphone app that helps control the all electric vehicles is intuitive.

Now, reading Jessica Benton’s article started me off thinking so I did a google search for some other articles on the subject and discovered some more interestingposts! e.g. this post by Melody Bomgardner, posted earlier today, over on Cleantech Chemistry:

can’t make decent cars. I found his description of the psychology behind the engineering of the Volt to be quite compelling. I urge you to read the full article, because I don’t want to give away the review. Here’s a snippet: What makes the Volt the Darling of Detroit is that it has been reverse-engineered to match the perverse American psyche. Americans hate buying gas but love to drive. We definitely want to stick it to the sheikhs, and in the process maybe save the planet, so we want cars that run on sunshine, twigs and happy thoughts.

Yet another fantastic post came from Autoblog Staff over on Follow Cars posted back in 2010 and entitled Chevy Volt home charger priced at $490 or nearly $2K with installation which is also definitely worth reading!

Filed under: Hybrid, Sedan, Technology, Chevrolet, ElectricSure, the sticker price for the 240V Voltec home charging unit designed to quickly and efficiently recharge the Chevrolet Volt is a wallet-friendly $490, but this is a case where reading the fine print is important. That’s because the cost to install this charger in your garage is slightly more. General Motors estimates that installation of the Voltec unit will cost you around $1,475, so we’re talking about a near $2,000 premium to have your Volt suck down electrons faster than it would if just plugged into a wall. The Volt can charge just fine from a standard outlet and comes with a 120V-to-J1772 charger. Using that method will take around ten hours to reach a full charge from empty, while using 240V charger Voltec charger will cut that down to around four hours. For people who have short commutes or plan to leave the Volt plugged in every night, a 240V system might be overkill since the Volt has a gasoline-powered generator on board to extend its range should the electrons dry up. The Voltec system’s $2,000 overall cost, however, is in line with the Aerovironment 240V charge station for the all-electric Nissan Leaf.

 [...]

Nissan says that charger will cost $2,200 installed, though Leaf fans began complaining that Nissan was forcing owners to use just one installer and the automaker has since pointed out that there are cheaper alternatives available. Of course, there are ways to get free chargers (i.e. luck out and live in place with local incentives or be one of the first Volt buyers), but most people looking to add a Volt to their garage will need to cough up an extra $2,000 to receive quick-charging functionality. With the things that it did; a car is truly something that made our travels much easier. Either going to school or going to work, either a mile or two; having a car just changes everything. But on the event that it no longer runs, this is when the problem starts. The car’s engine could sometimes only travel so much. With a given mileage, there will come a time when buying a new engine plus the cost of labor would be more costly than a new car. Therefore, there will come a time when the only way for a car is to have it dumped.

Without a broken down car in a garage, there are a lot of things that a homeowner could do to a space that was created. It could now be used for the new car to be parked. It could also be used for some new tools to be placed or it could also mean a bigger space for bigger plans. Since companies that do scrap car removal in Calgary have been operating; more homes are experiencing a better breathing space and a cleaner garage. Without the companies that do car removal in Calgary; the place would be the same as other places experiencing a clogged garage.

Because of the benefit of a cleared garage, there are residents that voluntarily donate a car in Canada. And since the main area of operation is in Calgary, more homes are now more than willing to donate their car in Calgary than any other area. The trouble with a junk car in Calgary is the same in any other area in Canada. With the space it occupies, there is no reason for it to stay inside the house. One of the most popular choices you have is to sell your car to a junk yard or salvage yard that will then use it for spare parts. The most profitable choice you have is likely going to be selling the car to a scrap metal yard, though the money your junk car will fetch will depend on what type of car it is wand what type of metals it is made of. The price that most salvage cars for sale will fetch at the local scrap yard will in large part depend on their age and manufacturer. Older vehicle tend to be made of more metal than their modern counterparts and Chevy and ford usually use more metal than cheap Japanese imports.Tags: salvage cars for sale. How It’s Made ? Luxury Cars (Rolls Royce Phantom) « B2B Trade …

Recently I stumbled upon a great article posted earlier today, by z, and entitled How It's Made ? Luxury Cars (Rolls Royce Phantom) « B2B Trade … that I would encourage anyone to read! Below are a couple of excerpts in order to whet your appetites!

It carries an aura and status. I fully understand what you are saying, BMW 7 series has everything, but the one car that makes you turn head is RR. Plus its exclusivity as well. Its more of a psychological thing is a frugal/cost benefit analysis. But look at the Bentley continental 4 door sedan and compare the body structure to Phaeton, A8. Same engine, same tranny, same design, etc.

Now then, reading z’s article started me thinking so I googled for some other articles on the subject and uncovered some more greats. i.e. this post by admin, posted last week, over on Audi Auto:

Also, Audi are known to be bland…they are like the Toyota of Germany cars. X6 is not a BMW. Great car, but doesnt deserve the badge…and with the badge, its just a piece of crap. Give it a Mercedes tri-star badge and you’ll be fine. This is coming from a die-hard BMW fan too. So, if a BMW fan doesnt like a certain BMW, there must be a problem with that car. The Infiniti is still trying to establish itself as a international luxoury model. Even though they are doing great, there are still down sides to it.

Finally, another fantastic post on the subject came from admin on IP Reviews posted a fortnight ago, entitled 2012 BMW 7 Series which is also definitely worth reading.

The appearance of BMW’s flagship sedan should remain much the same. Industry website Iguida reports that some colors might be available but didn’t say which new colors would be added. Buyers can expect the same clean styling and basic design as last year’s model. Large Size Reports indicate that the 2012 BMW 7 Series will be available in the standard length and Li models. The Li or executive saloon model has a slightly wheelbase. This gives it more rear leg room because it is often used as a Limousine in Europe. The standard model for 2012 should be about 199.

 [...]

The turbocharged 3.0 liter six cylinder should provide drivers with 315 horsepower and 330 pounds of torque. The 4.4 liter V-8 should give drivers 400 horsepower and 450 pounds of torque. The Alpina B7 version of the V-8 should give drivers 500 horsepower and 516 pounds of torque.

Reasons for this: #1 business people are trying to show being successful and is a right off, #2 regular people try to say they are rich, but really can’t afford the car. When these are are turned back in, in a year or two they are then sold at a more normal price for a consumer vehicle.Standards inincome tax deptt. has a million eyes that is why it is financed many people also buy second hand to show they dont have enough moneyDr. Knowitallwho wants to pay all that in cash? you could invest it and get a higher return than the interest on the car loan.Ozekimost people do finance their cars so maybe they just dont have all the money to shell out all at once or they feel more comfortable making payments some people r rich and they want to buy expensive things because they canbrightnessEgo, plain ego.

Earlier I found a good article by Tremelune, posted last week, and entitled The cars here are awesome – Baexpats – Community of Expatriates in … that I would strongly suggest everyone reads. Below are a few little extracts in the hope of whetting your appetites!

There actually are a lot of cool cars here- but cars from the 70′s? I mean, they did keep building the notorious Ford Falcon here a good 10 or 15 years later than they did in the states, and they also kept building the Peugot 504 here for at least ten years after it was gone in France. But Argentina has had auto factories for close to 100 years now, and they build some pretty modern cars here right now, too… The coolest thing, in my book, is the strange vintage cars you see here- a buddy of mine recently bought this Isetta- and he took me to the mechanic who restored it,where there were probably 30 micro cars- BMW’s, Heinkels, Messerschmitts, Gogomobils, all kinds of wacky tiny cars from the 50′s. The Isetta has a one cylinder 350cc engine. There are a fair amount of these still running in Argentina, along with Fiat 600′s, and other more medium sized little cars. I also really like some of the Argentine models made here- their version of the jeep, the Rastrojero, is a really great retro mini pickup.http://www.google.

Yet another fine article on the subject came from davyjones9 on Auto Cruise EA posted three weeks ago, entitled Ahmadinejad's tired 1977 Peugeot 504 draws $1M bid which is also definitely worth a read!

By davyjones9 Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad recently put his 1977 Peugeot 504 on auction. The original price for a ’77 504 was in the neighborhood of $9,000, and a used one like Ahmadinejad’s could fetch $2,000 in its local market. The bidding just shot up to a million dollars , because someone thinks the car is worth a million bucks. The million-dollar bid came from an Arab country but further details have not been released. Proceeds from the sale of the 504 will be used to build a low-income housing project.
